Presidential election in Iran: how will women vote?

Iranians went to the polls on Friday, June 28, to elect a new president after the death of Ebrahim Raisi. How much weight will the female vote carry in this election, two years after the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini?

In Tehran, Iran, residents voted at the mosque on Friday June 28. Men voted in the main hall, but women were segregated to the rear of the building. Four candidates were validated by the Revolutionary Guard Council. Traditionally in Iran, the conservative electorate mobilizes more for elections. Tazegol Abolfatti, a 64-year-old conservative, says that women who refuse to wear the veil in Iran must return to the straight and narrow.

In Iran, however, some women hope for another life. In a beauty salon, where Iranian women can remove their veils, they anonymously tell of their economic difficulties and what the mullahs accuse them of, such as “makeup, hair, nails, manicure”. “We can’t change things”, a woman resigns herself. In this context, the reform candidate hopes to create a surprise and mobilize enough to reach the second round. However, in Iran, the Supreme Leader remains the one who sets the main political lines.
