It is a sad anniversary, that of the death of young Nahel during a refusal to comply in Nanterre, which caused riots and massive destruction. Many neighborhoods still bear the scars of this violence.

A year later, everything remained frozen. In Châtellerault (Vienna), the shell of the shopping center destroyed during the riots is still there. On June 30, 2023, the neighborhood caught fire after Nahel’s death. Around ten businesses were burned and with them the cars of certain residents, destroyed. Thursday June 27, Roland Plault and his daughter begin to turn the page. His insurance compensated him for his car.

But for others, rebuilding is more difficult. On June 30, Aïssa Henni saw his café burn before his eyes. He received 16,000 euros in compensation, but with his 900 euros of RSA, he struggles to repay the 600 euros per month loan to buy his premises. Soon, new premises will be offered to him nearby. The demolition has finally been approved and the town hall is going to buy the land. “From there, we can do a project with the residents”, explains Maryse Labrard, first deputy mayor of Châtellerault. Construction begins in November and will last several months so that the heart of this neighborhood can beat again.
