The premier said the fire was now classified as “category 1”, meaning fires were still smoldering on the ground, but they were less than a meter high.

Power was restored to Wabush in western Labrador on Wednesday after a break in the flames allowed utility workers to reach the Churchill Falls generating station.

The fire had cut power to two of the power station’s transmission lines on Tuesday, when the flames had just crossed the Churchill River and progressed towards the city, forcing the evacuation of the small team which was still maintaining the power station .

Two mines in western Labrador are also back in operation after being hit by a power outage.
