Libya: climate change causing an immense drought
Libya: climate change causing an immense drought

In Libya, climate change is a reality. For several months, drought has affected previously fertile regions. The villagers must then adapt or leave.

Drought, linked to climate change, has caused the change of many landscapes in Libya. This is a sad observation for farmers who lived off the wealth of their land. With the meager water reserves they have, they try to save what they can. Many residents of the region have already left because living conditions have become too difficult.

Bringing a tanker truck to your village has a price. The water will be used to water the plots of land in small quantities, two to three times a week. But the villagers are demanding more help. The system of pumping stations should also be developed. But Libya is still unstable and lacks resources. Ultimately, the exodus in the region cannot be avoided because the country is one of the driest in the world with annual precipitation of less than 200 mm. The desert thus covers 90% of the territory.
