Jordan Bardella sparked a controversy by announcing that he wanted to prohibit French people with dual nationality from accessing certain positions.
Excluding dual nationals from so-called strategic and sensitive jobs, is it really possible? Yes, according to the National Rally. Jordan Bardella, through his party’s program for the legislative elections, wants “to book” posts “in sectors particularly linked to security and defense exclusively to French citizens”. Their proposal would involve a law and a decree. Dual nationals could be prohibited from doing certain jobs. According to the RN, only a handful of people would be targeted.
A proposal which caused a stir within the political class. Some denounce an imprecise measure, which would confuse origin and skills. Another problem: this measure is difficult to implement without a revision of the Constitution. Because today, a binational French citizen has all the rights and obligations attached to French nationality. Currently, dual nationality does not prevent access to public service jobs.
