Russia was quick to react. The Kremlin threatened the United States on Monday June 24 with “consequences”the day after a Ukrainian strike in Crimea, carried out according to Moscow using an American missile. “It is obvious that the participation of the United States in the fighting, its direct participation, which leads to the death of Russian citizens, must have consequences”, insisted to the press Dmitri Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian presidency. He also accused Westerners of “kill Russian children”.

“Responsibility for the deliberate missile strike against civilians in Sevastopol (city in Crimea) lies primarily with Washington, which supplied these weapons to Ukraine” as well as to the authorities in kyiv, the ministry said in a press release on Sunday. “Such actions will not go unanswered”, he added. The missile attack left three dead, including two children, and around a hundred injured in Sevastopol, according to local governor Mikhail Razvojaïev on Telegram, installed by Moscow. Crimea was annexed in 2014 by Russia, and remains a territory disputed by Ukraine, which regularly carries out military operations there.

After this strike, Russian diplomacy announced that the American ambassador in Moscow had been summoned. The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it had informed diplomat Lynne Tracy that “the United States, which is waging a hybrid war against Russia, has become a party to the conflict” in Ukraine and that “retaliatory measures would follow”.
