Leylah Fernandez loses in quarter-finals in Birmingham

Quebecer Leylah Fernandez gave in after an excellent first round, losing 1-6, 6-3 and 6-2 against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic on Friday in the quarter-final of the Rothesay Classic.

Fernandez, seeded sixth in Birmingham, won 82.6% of rallies with her first serve and erased the only break point she faced in the first set while breaking Tomljanovic’s serve twice in four opportunities.

Tomljanovic responded by taking advantage of his two break points in the second set, one of which gave him a 4-2 lead. The Australian maintained the upper hand during the third set by quickly taking a 3-0 lead.

This was Fernandez’s first grass-court tournament this year. The 21-year-old from Laval, 33rd in the world, boasts a 13-12 record in singles so far this season.
