What to watch for on Thursday June 20, 2024?

Newly elected Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will unveil part of her government today. The first woman at the head of the country, after her overwhelming victory obtained on June 3 with 59.3% of the votes, she affirmed during the campaign that she wanted to continue the orientations of her predecessor in the Movement for National Regeneration (Morena) in matters of of social policies and the fight against the violence of drug cartels, while signaling its desire to introduce new environmental policies, including one making access to water a human right.

If the politician has discredited feminist movements in the past, her election is nevertheless part of a phenomenon of increased representation of women in politics. As of 2021, the percentage of women deputies in Mexico is 49.2% (and 50.8% for senators), which has allowed Congress to approach gender parity and place the country ahead of the global plan for female representation. It remains to be seen whether this parity will be reflected in the composition of the next government.
