We owe it to Régis Labaume to make us aware of the meaning of the term “kakistocracy”, derived from the Greek kakistos (superlative of worst) and kratos (power) and which is intended to be a synonym for “journey to the heart of incompetence” according to the author Isabelle Barth.
In recent political history, we have rarely seen a prime minister so quickly squander the precious trust he acquired during the pandemic. No other politician or platform manager would have done better than François Legault in the circumstances and his leadership presaged rigorous and visionary management of public affairs.
However, although the captain had navigated so well in troubled waters, he quickly lost his compass and, despite his request to Santa Claus last year, he never really found his bearings. Untimely decisions, occasional flip-flop, today he invokes a pseudo-humility to justify the green light to the delusional granted to the project of 3e link resurrected after the defeat of the CAQ in Jean-Talon.
Over time, Mr. Legault was able to drag several of his subjects into his wake of political opportunism. From the subsidy to the Los Angeles Kings to the failures of Eric Caire’s SAAQ computer system, including the stubbornness of Minister Martine Biron to open a business office in Israel, the CAQistocracy, a version with a poutine flavor Quebecois of the kakistocracy, risks sticking irremediably to the entire work of this government.
And rather than laughing at the tragicomedy of 3e a link which now borders on vaudeville, we must rather cry about it, because it is the confidence of citizens in their elected officials, all parties combined, which is undermined.
