Rougemania | Cultural reappropriation | The Press

Documentary filmmakers Neil Diamond and Catherine Bainbridge launch Rougemania at the Cinémathèque québécoise.

In Rougemania (Red Fever), for which he wrote the screenplay and directed with his partner in Reel InjunCanadian documentary filmmaker Catherine Bainbridge (RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World), Cree Nation photographer and filmmaker Neil Diamond questions the fascination that indigenous cultures exert on non-natives.

Traveling across America and Europe, he demonstrates how popular culture pays homage to, is inspired by, appropriates or caricatures the culture of the First Nations without really knowing them.

This Friday evening, the two directors and co-executive producer Ernest Webb will participate in a question-and-answer period following the screening of Rougemania from 7:30 p.m., at the Cinémathèque québécoise.

To mark National Indigenous Peoples Day, the film will also be presented on June 21, at 7 p.m., at the Museum cinema. Rougemania also hits theaters on Friday.
