How many women have left the military after sexual assault? What protection does the institution provide them? And what sanctions for their attackers?

It was her dream, however, Manon Dubois abandoned her career in the French Navy. Her attacker is still working while she is a seller in the markets. In the army, the young recruit was the victim of repeated sexual assaults for two years.

She denounces the lightness of the sanction of her attacker, and of his conviction by the courts: 600 euros in damages and an obligation to follow an awareness course on sexist violence. A few months after denouncing the facts, Manon Dubois left the army. She believes she was not protected by the institution.

His testimony led to others. Laetitia Saint-Paul, the first military woman to become an MP, received dozens of them in her mailbox. “Special Envoy” met victims who accuse the “Grande Muette” of having reduced them to silence, women who left the ranks with regret after being attacked. The beginnings of a #MeToo of the armies?

In 2014, the army created the Thémis cell to collect testimony from victims of sexual violence with the promise of exemplary sanctions against the attackers. Ten years later, what is his assessment? How are victims of sexual violence in the ranks treated?

A report by Laura Aguirre de Carcer, Swanny Thiébaut, Marielle Krouk and Vincent Zanetto broadcast in “Envoyéspecial” on June 13, 2024.
