The world has a record number of 120 million forcibly displaced people, according to figures as of the end of April, the UN announced on Thursday June 13. This number, which continues to increase, is “a terrible indictment on the state of the world”denounces the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in its annual report.
The wars in Gaza, Sudan and Burma have contributed significantly to increasing the number of people forced to flee their places of residence for more than a year, the report highlights. “War remains the main driver of mass displacement”, explained the head of the UNHCR, Filippo Grandi. For comparison, at the end of 2023, 117.3 million people were displaced.
In 2023, UNHCR declared 43 emergency situations in 29 countries, more than four times what was the rule just a few years ago, insisted Filippo Grandi. The latter deplored “the way conflicts are conducted…with total disregard” international law, and “often with the specific aim of terrorizing populations”which contributes “Of course” to further strengthen the phenomenon. Filippo Grandi acknowledged that there currently appeared to be little hope of reversing the trend.
