(Rome) The leaders of several far-right parties, including Marine Le Pen, president of the National Rally (RN) in France and Matteo Salvini, head of the League in Italy, meet on Wednesday in Brussels to take stock after the elections European.
“The leaders of the ID group are meeting in Brussels to take stock of the situation after the European elections,” wrote the League in a message published Tuesday evening on WhatsApp.
In Paris, the RN confirmed on Wednesday this closed-door meeting of party leaders who are members of the ID group as well as the presence of Mme The pen.
The Identity and Democracy (ID) group currently has seven parties and 59 MEPs and has so far been the subject of a “cordon santé” from the rest of the European Parliament due to its anti-Islam, anti-immigration, anti-EU or anti-environment of its members.
Building on the success of the RN during the European elections, with more than 31% of votes obtained, these parties now wish to have more influence in European choices.
“This is the first significant political meeting […] and the wish of Matteo Salvini, who will see the allies, starting with Marine Le Pen, is to create the basis of a broad center-right alliance without the socialists and eco-extremists”, specifies the League, adding that the meeting will take place in the afternoon.
The far right emerged strengthened from the European elections which ended on Sunday, but it remains divided within the European Parliament into two groups, ID and Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), the rapprochement remaining very uncertain due to their significant differences, particularly on Russia.
Two polls published Monday give the RN at 33% -34% of voting intentions for the early legislative elections of June 30 and July 7, i.e. more than 15 points more than two years ago, offering the possibility for the first time for the far right to come to power in France, which would considerably strengthen Ms.me Le Pen in Europe.
Matteo Salvini’s Anti-Migrant League, which took 34% of the votes in the 2019 European elections, received only 9% of the votes in the last election.
