Singers less present on the radio

A study led by musicologist Jada Watson, in partnership with the National Arts Center Ottawa and the activist group Women in Music Canada, examined the 150 most played songs between 2013 and 2023, as well as all tracks released in 2023 on various types of popular radio stations.

The results show that women’s songs, particularly those of women of color, were offered on the radio much less than those of men. It is on rock stations that women are less represented. They only occupied 1.9% of circulation in 2023.
