The UN Security Council adopted on Monday June 10 a draft American resolution supporting the ceasefire plan in Gaza. The text, which “greet” the truce proposal announced on May 31 by American President Joe Biden received 14 votes in its favor. Russia, for its part, abstained.

Claiming that Israel has “accepted“this plan, the text of this draft resolution presses Hamas “to also accept it and calls on both parties to fully implement its terms without delay and without conditions.” In a statement, the Islamist group in power in the Gaza Strip said “greeted” the vote of the Security Council, while reaffirming “his willingness to cooperate with the brother mediators to begin indirect negotiations regarding the implementation of these principles.”

Hamas, for its part, demands a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory. Thus, Washington is leading an intense diplomatic campaign to push Hamas to accept this proposal in three phases.

After more than eight months of war, the plan highlighted in this draft American resolution provides, in a first phase, for a six-week ceasefire accompanied by an Israeli withdrawal from the densely populated areas of Gaza, the release of certain hostages kidnapped during the Hamas attack and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Widely criticized for having blocked several draft resolutions calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, the United States, Israel’s ally, has continued to justify itself in recent months, ensuring that a truce cannot come. than an agreement on the ground.

A sign of the all-out American diplomatic campaign, American Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in the Middle East on Monday to promote this ceasefire plan.
