North Korea once again sent hundreds of balloons filled with garbage to South Korea on Monday June 10. Additionally, Kim Jong-un’s sister and main regime spokesperson, Kim Yo-jong, called the South Korean activists’ leaflets ” “psychological warfare”. She also threatened Seoul with retaliation if these campaigns did not stop, according to a statement cited by the official KCNA news agency. If South Korea “simultaneously disperses leaflets and broadcasts provocations across the border by loudspeaker, he [le pays] will undoubtedly witness the new response” from the North, she added.
It must be said that relations between the two Koreas are going through one of the most difficult times in years. In recent weeks, Pyongyang has sent hundreds of balloons weighted with waste such as cigarette butts, toilet paper and even animal feces to its southern neighbor. North Korea justifies these shipments as a response to the dissemination of propaganda, particularly via leaflets or USB keys, by South Korean activists.
According to the South Korean army, a large part of the garbage balloons sent overnight from Sunday to Monday encountered headwinds. “Although they launched more than 310 balloons, many of them flew in the direction of North Korea”, said the Joint Chiefs of Staff, adding that around fifty balloons had landed in the South so far. The latest batch of garbage-laden balloons contained waste paper and plastic, without any toxic materials, he said.
