Mexico has elected its very first “presidenta”!

Last Sunday, Mexicans elected their new president: Claudia Sheinbaum. The result of this vote is historic! For what ? This will be the first time that a woman leads a North American country. We introduce you to the new leader everyone is talking about.

Two candidates, one page of history

We knew that the election would be historic long before knowing the result of the vote. This is because the two main candidates were women: Claudia Sheinbaum and Xóchitl Gálvez. So, whoever won, Mexico was assured of electing the first president in its history.

A crushing victory

Claudia Sheinbaum ultimately won the election hands down. About 6 out of 10 voters voted for her! During his victory speech, the news presidenta (that means “president” in Spanish!) said: “We all made it. With our heroines who gave us our homeland, our ancestors, our mothers, our daughters and our granddaughters. »

A party on the left

Claudia Sheinbaum represents the Morena party, the same party as the current president. This political party is considered “left-wing”. This means that values such as equality, solidarity and ecology are at the heart of its decisions.

Claudia Sheinbaum promised Mexicans that if she were elected, she would make the country safer. She also wants to improve programs that help people in need.

From scientist to mayor… to president!

This president is above all a scientist… like her parents! Claudia Sheinbaum is an energy efficiency expert. This means that it is thinking about ways not to waste the resources that produce electricity. In 2007, she joined the IPCC. This is a United Nations body responsible for studying climate change. His group won a Nobel Peace Prize that same year!

She began her political career in 2000, becoming an environmental official in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. She played a big role in the development of the metrobus, a rapid public transport line. And then, in 2018, she was elected mayor of the metropolis!

A family who fled the war

You have to tell yourself that “Sheinbaum” doesn’t sound very Mexican! It is a name that comes from Eastern Europe, like his grandparents, who are from Lithuania and Bulgaria. During World War II, they were persecuted because they were Jewish. They were forced to flee their country to Mexico. And many years later, their granddaughter would become its first president. What a story !
