To connect Toulouse, in Haute-Garonne, to Castres, in Tarn, a motorway is supposed to see the light of day. But the A69, criticized for its ecological and social consequences, continues to mobilize its many opponents.

It is a 20-year-old project, actively supported by the industry and a large number of local elected officials. : connect Toulouse (Haute-Garonne) to Castres (Tarn) by 53 km of motorway. “Detailed studies have been carried out to see that there is no other credible alternative.“, insists an elected official.

Opponents denounce the uselessness of this new route, which will cost 17 euros for a round trip. “It is a toll highway, very expensive and socially unfair. It will penalize us by adding roundabouts and removing two diversions, forcing local traffic to go back through the villages“, points out an opponent. For months, demonstrations and occupations of the construction site have been increasing. In focus: the environmental impact, because road transport is the main emitter of greenhouse gases in France. In October 2023 , more than 1,800 scientists have called on the government to abandon the project. Legal actions are still underway.
