Soon, young Quebecers will be able to count on a person whose one and only job will be to protect them. How ? Ensuring that the welfare and rights of children are respected. The government is currently looking for this rare gem. I’ll explain to you the challenges that this (quasi) superhero will have to face!
Unfortunately no cape or name cool for our future protector. His position: Commissioner for Children’s Welfare and Rights. But ensuring the well-being of young Quebecers is more than cool : This is a big and important responsibility.
This is why the Quebec government wants to take the time to choose the best person for this position. The latter must already have extensive experience in the field of child protection. We hope to find the future commissioner by the end of 2024.
What does a commissioner for children’s well-being and rights do?
Its main mission will be to listen to the needs of Quebec’s children. He will, in a way, be their spokesperson on all issues that affect them. He will also have to work for their well-being and ensure that children know their rights.
Fortunately, he won’t be alone! The commissioner will be assisted by a deputy commissioner. It’s like Robin from Batman! And, good news, it will also be able to rely on committees (groups) made up of children and young adults.
First Nations children and Inuit children will not be taken into care by the commissioner. This is a request from the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador and the Makivvik Corporation. They explained that “First Nations and Inuit are best placed to meet the needs of their children in the most appropriate way.” The commissioner will work with the communities that want him.
Dedicating ourselves to the well-being and rights of children is important. Do you know anyone who might be a good candidate for this job?
