American veteran of the Second World War Robert Persichitti died last week while traveling to Europe to attend the commemorations of the Allied landings of June 6, 1944, announced the American association Honor Flight, confirming the information given on June 1 by the newspaper Rochester First.
Aged 102, “Bob” Persichitti had traveled by plane with a companion and was sailing on a boat along the French coast when he suffered a “medical emergency”, Honor Flight reported in a Facebook post, without specifying the nature of this emergency. The veteran was then evacuated by air to Germany but died shortly after, on May 31, according to the association, which cites other veterans who traveled with him.
Robert Persichitti was a radio operator for the US Navy aboard the command ship USS Eldorado. He served on the Pacific front, notably at Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Guam, where American forces faced the Japanese army.
