85% of 15-24 year olds say they have gone to the cinema at least once in 2023

According to a study by the National Cinema Center, young people continue to go to the cinema, but the practice is becoming more occasional.

85% of 15-24 year olds say they have gone to the cinema at least once in 2023, according to a study by the CNC (the National Cinema Center) published Thursday June 6 and consulted by franceinfo. If we take into account all French people, this average drops to 64%, specifies the study.

The aim of this two-part study, qualitative and quantitative, commissioned by the CNC from the BVA polling institute is to see if the Covid-19 pandemic or the platforms have changed young people’s cinema habits. The study shows that they continue to go but that the practice has become more occasional: four sessions on average per young person per year compared to seven previously.

According to Cécile Lacoue, director of studies at the CNC, it is undoubtedly on this regularity of attendance that the effects of Covid and the density of online offers have an impact: “For 10-15 years, what we have seen is that there are always more offers, choices, works, we have a hyper abundance of films and series available, we also have the platforms streaming like Netflix, Prime or Disney+, there are also social networks which take up time and space in the lives of young people, there is Youtube, video games etc. All of this means that we are not in it. the same competitive universe today as we were 20 years ago”, she explains.

Concerning the type of films favored by 15-24 year olds who go to the cinema, the study underlines a hegemony of big-budget American productions (Marvel, Disney, or franchises like Fast and Furious) to the detriment of French films often assimilated by young people to comedies. Other lessons from this study are the fact that young people, constantly exposed to videos, particularly on social networks or platforms, say they adapt the effort of going to the gym to the time and attention they have. Many consider, for example, that a two-hour film is too long. Still according to the study, the price of the entrance ticket, considered too high, is seen as a barrier. 56% of people who no longer go to the cinema highlight this criterion. Finally, regarding the future, 76% of current young spectators intend to continue going to the cinema afterwards and many continue to “sanctuary” the dark room as the best place to discover films.
