Liberal leader wants Quebec to arm itself for the 5th wave

The leader of the Liberal Party of Quebec, Dominique Anglade, wants a resumption of democratic activities earlier than expected due to the 5th wave of COVID-19. She sent a letter to Prime Minister François Legault on Thursday evening to make the request and will hold a press briefing on Friday morning to this effect.

The letter calls for the resumption of parliamentary activities before February 1 to deal with the 5th wave.

According to information obtained by Radio-Canada, the politician demands more transparency and deplores that certain information on health measures were not disclosed during recent press conferences.

During a press briefing Thursday, the Minister of Health, Christian Dubé, indicated that Quebec is facing an Omicron tidal wave. More than 3,000 hospital beds could soon be occupied by patients with COVID-19, according to INESSS projections.

Quebec also indicated that more than 20,000 employees of the health network are absent due to COVID-19, which is leading to bed closures.

In addition, in some regions, hospitals will have to move to level 4 offloading. At this stage, cardiac surgeries deemed not very urgent may in particular be postponed.

Further details will follow.
