Will the French Muslim Worship Council (CFCM) last until its twentieth anniversary? Nothing is less sure. In a column published Friday, January 7 on the site of the daily Opinion, its president considers that this body created in 2003 “no longer viable”, evokes a “self-dissolving” and invites a new organization of worship in consultation with the “forum for Islam in France” initiated by the government.
In this text, Mohammed Moussaoui recognizes that “the CFCM in its current format is no longer viable”. In December, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin declared that this interlocutor of the public authorities since 2003 was “dead”.
The government has launched a “Forum de l’islam de France” (Forif) which should meet in the coming weeks and lead to a form of representation of Islam based on departmental actors, and no longer based on supervision. federations of mosques affiliated to countries (Algeria, Morocco, Turkey) that make up the CFCM.
“There is the possibility of bringing out in a coordinated manner with the public authorities a new organization of the Muslim religion, legitimized by the actors in the field”, believes Mohammed Moussaoui. According to him, “this must be the result of a concertation associating the Forif and the departmental structures of the Muslim religion in place or in the process of being”.
“This new organization could be followed by a self-dissolution of the CFCM in accordance with its statutes”, he adds. Mohammed Moussaoui, whose presidency ends on January 19, invites “all the components of the CFCM to be part of this approach” and to “to take note of this orientation during an extraordinary general meeting which could take place soon”.
For him, “all the cults of our country have had to adapt to a moment in their history”. “The Islam of France is at this crossroads. Turning the page from the current format of representative bodies of Muslim worship and inventing new forms of organization which are in keeping with French society (…) is a first response to the many challenges facing Islam in France “.
