In order to “move the construction industry towards more sustainable practices”, a committee of 15 experts in this sector, which was headed by Recyc-Québec, issued nine recommendations this Wednesday.
Construction, renovation and demolition residue represents nearly a third of the materials eliminated each year, according to a press release from Recyc-Québec. In order to prevent these materials from ending up in landfills, the committee therefore advises listing the sorting facilities authorized to process them, with the aim of facilitating the search for recycling options in the province.
Experts also believe that it is necessary to evaluate the different options to ensure that more construction, renovation or demolition waste is not sent to landfills. He mentions in particular the idea of putting in place tax or financial incentives for this purpose.
The committee also recommends offering training to entrepreneurs to make them aware of the principles of the circular economy and the benefits of including them in their new projects. The Association of Construction and Housing Professionals of Quebec, the Union of Municipalities of Quebec and the Ministry of the Environment, the Fight against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks were notably part of this work group.
