Dunes follows closely, being cited 10 times. The film adaptation by Denis Villeneuve of the famous novel by Frank Herbert is in the running for the Oscar for best film, but was finally excluded from the category of best director, to everyone’s surprise. It is not unusual for a film to be cited in the queen category without also being selected in the category of best director, but the phenomenon is still rarer for a production collecting so many selections. The filmmakers selected in this category are Kenneth Branagh (Belfast), Ryūsuke Hamaguchi (Drive my Car), Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza), Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog) and Steven Spielberg (West Side Story).

Denis Villeneuve nevertheless collected an individual honor by being cited, with his co-screenwriters Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth, in the category of best adapted screenplay.

International films are also doing well in this race. Flee, by Dane Jonas Poher Rasmussen, managed the feat of being nominated in the categories of best international film, best documentary and best animated feature film. Like Rome in 2019 and Parasite in 2020, Drive my Carby the Japanese Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, combines the citations in the categories of best international film and best film, in addition to being cited in the categories of best adapted screenplay and best direction. madres paralelasby Pedro Pedro Almodóvar, notably earned Penélope Cruz a selection in the category of best actress. Julie (in 12 chapters)by Norwegian Joachim Trier, was also selected in the category of best original screenplay.
