The government launched its conference to combat anti-Semitism on Monday, May 6, in order to defend itself against increasingly frequent acts in France.

In 2023, 1,676 anti-Semitic acts were recorded, compared to 436 in 2022. Mockery, insults, physical attacks, this figure has almost quadrupled in one year. According to the American Jewish Committee, since the Hamas attack in Israel on October 7, anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist acts have become commonplace in France. Thus, 86% of French Jews fear being victims of anti-Semitic attacks.

Hatred of Israel is to blame

With the foundations for the fight against anti-Semitism, Aurore Bergé, the minister responsible for the fight against discrimination, wants to raise awareness. She calls for a “collective burst” so that “every French person feels directly concerned”. Hatred of Israel is one of the primary causes of anti-Semitism. The survey shows that 35% of those under 25 believe it is justified to attack Jews because of their supposed support for Israel. Finally, according to the survey, 80% of French Jews have felt lonely since the events of October 7.
