On Saturday evening, at the closing ceremony of the 81e Venice Film Festival, Oto’s Planeta short film in virtual and mixed reality by French director Gwenael François, was awarded the Special Jury Prize in the Venice Immersive section. Oto’s Planet is the result of a co-production between the Luxembourg studio Skill Lab, the Montreal studio Dpt. and the French studio Small Creative, which was made possible thanks to the financial support of the Film Fund Luxembourg and the Canada Media Fund. The project had also been noticed at the Atelier Grand Nord XR, organized by SODEC.
“Throughout the Festival, the reaction of everyone who came to experience it Oto’s Planet was fantastic. The project touched people and demonstrated once again that the combination of storytelling, interactivity and graphic quality are pillars for an engaging and meaningful immersive experience,” mentioned Gwenael François, from Skill Lab, and Nicolas S. Roy, from Dpt., in a press release.
Featuring a character who must protect his tiny planet from an invader, Oto’s Planet addresses various themes, including colonization, immigration, the environment and the protection of indigenous territories. Distributed by Astrea, Gwenael François’ short film will be available in the Meta Quest Store and the App Store this fall.
