817,000 Tesla recall for seat belt warning signal

(New York) Tesla has initiated the recall of 817,143 vehicles in the United States to adjust the alert that sounds when the seat belt is not fastened, which may not activate under certain conditions, according to agency documents road safety authority, NHTSA.

The owners of the vehicles concerned will however not have to move since Tesla plans to update the software controlling this signal remotely, details the NHTSA in a letter dated Wednesday and consulted Thursday by AFP.

In the United States, regulations require vehicles to emit a starting sound when the driver forgets to fasten their seat belt.

But on some Model S and Model X years 2021-2022 and on all Model 3 and Model Y of the manufacturer of electric vehicles, “a software error can prevent the alert from activating”, explains the NHTSA.

The conditions for this problem to occur are very limited.

The alert must have been interrupted without the seat belt having been fastened when the vehicle was previously picked up, if the driver got out of the car and closed the door while the alert was still ringing, for example.

The car must also not be driven at more than 22 km/h.

This problem does not concern the light warning that the seat belt is not fastened, which is triggered in all circumstances.

Tesla is not aware of any injury or death caused by the use of the feature.

Earlier this week, the NHTSA had announced another recall initiated by Tesla, this time concerning nearly 54,000 vehicles equipped with the FSD Beta driver assistance system and which can in certain circumstances continue to drive automatically after having exceeded a “Stop” sign instead of a full stop.
