Mexico: 80% of the territory is in a state of drought

80% of Mexican territory is currently in a state of drought. The 21 million residents of the Mexico City metropolitan area are facing a 25% drop in water supply.
Since the end of October, Ana Diaz, a resident of Mexico City (Mexico), has suffered repeated water cuts. The metropolitan area’s 21 million residents are experiencing a 25% reduction in water supply. The cause is insufficient precipitation in 2023. The basins partly supplying the region are only at 40% of their capacity. Because there is not enough water in the pipes, Mexico City services intervene on the leaks as quickly as possible.
The situation could get worse
It is difficult to manage water in this urban area built on an ancient lake and densely populated. In a suburb of the Mexican capital, architects have designed a 20-hectare park almost entirely covered in volcanic stones, which work like a sponge. Currently, 80% of Mexican territory is in a state of drought, and the situation could get worse, with rains only expected in four months.
