Four octogenarian friends go to the 2017 Super Bowl in Houston to support the Patriots, but above all to see their idol, Tom Brady, play. The soccer star was instrumental in curing one of them from cancer 16 years ago. The quartet will then live crazy adventures during the biggest American sporting event.
This comedy that features four Hollywood legends won’t go down in history like the New England Patriots’ 2017 Super Bowl victory, but we’re having a good time with Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, Lily Tomlin and Sally Field, so let’s not spoil our pleasure!
Inspired by a true story, the screenplay written by Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern is filled with improbable and wacky scenes, but we laugh heartily with these four irresistible friends who will stop at nothing. Betty (Sally Field), a retired math teacher and stats champ, enters a spicy chicken wing eating contest, Trish (Jane Fonda, with much self-deprecation about her physique) plays a best-selling book author plays and flirts with a former Super Bowl champion (Harry Hamlin), while Maura (Rita Moreno) gambles huge amounts of money on poker!
Female solidarity and friendship are celebrated in this film. There are also some moving scenes on illness and widowhood, in particular, since Maura, newly widowed, has difficulty living alone, while Lou (Lily Tomlin) fears that her cancer will return.
The director Kyle Marvin, who signs his first feature film, however does not manage to make 80 for Brady a real good comedy, worthy of the talent of the four actresses. They deserved better. The film lacks rhythm and spirit.
80 for Brady is therefore a very light comedy, produced in particular by Tom Brady, who plays himself, as do some of his colleagues who make short appearances.
In the end, never give up is the message of the film. Even when you’re 25 points behind in a Super Bowl game, you have to believe it. And give it all. As do Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Morano and Sally Field. Accomplices and in great shape, these actresses prove that, whatever the age, you can still splurge with your friends and it does the greatest good. And Tom Brady now has plenty of time to do it, too!
