Shoah: 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp – (France info)
Saturday January 27, international day of remembrance of the Shoah and prevention of crimes against humanity. This date corresponds to the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp by the Soviets in 1945.
A duty to remember. As every year at Auschwitz (Poland), flowers and candles were placed in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, in the presence of the families of the victims or survivors. January 27 marks the World Day of Remembrance of the Victims, 79 years to the day after the liberation of the Auschwitz camp.
7,000 survivors
Among the survivors in 1945, some were children, tattooed for life by the memory of their deportation. In total, Russian soldiers freed 7,000 survivors while more than a million victims died before their arrival. On January 27, 1945, the whole world discovered the horror of the Shoah, the extermination of Jews and minorities on an industrial scale. Most of the French deportees, who came from Drancy, were taken to these camps, including Ginette Kolinka, who strives to testify.
