(Philadelphia) The 76ers of Philadelphia hired former Toronto Raptors Nick Nurse as head coach on Monday, according to a source familiar with the news.
The source disclosed the information to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Monday, as the team had yet to confirm the hire.
Nurse led the Raptors to the NBA championship in 2019, after knocking out 76ers in the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
Nurse will replace Doc Rivers, who was fired by the team after leading the 76ers to a second season of 50 consecutive victories, with Joel Embiid as leader, voted most valuable player to his team. Rivers, however, was unable to lead his club to the association final.
In five seasons at the helm of the Raptors, Nurse posted a 227-163 record. His .582 winning percentage is the best in Raptors history.
Nurse also served as an assistant coach for five seasons with the Raptors, while Dwane Casey was the lead. He then took charge of the team.
