74 years ago, the fleur-de-lis became the flag of Quebec

Precisely 74 years ago, on January 21, 1948, the fleur-de-lis took the place of the Union Jack, the British flag, at the top of the central tower of the Parliament of Quebec.

By decree, the Government of Quebec, then led by Prime Minister Maurice Duplessis, granted it the status of official flag of Quebec. It is to underline this ceremony that January 21 has been declared Flag Day.

The Mouvement national des Québécois affirms that the flag represents one of the most powerful means of communication of a nation and that it is an element of identification making it possible to recognize one’s own, to attract attention, to identify a jurisdiction.

On social media on Friday, Premier François Legault wrote that Flag Day is an important day for the identity of Quebecers. He invites them to celebrate their history and their culture.

Activities marking Flag Day are taking place across Quebec on Friday, including the distribution of material, formal flag raisings, various activities on social networks and the dissemination of capsules.
