Stade Rennais received a fine of 70,000 euros from the disciplinary committee of the Professional Football League meeting on Wednesday in Paris, after the homophobic chants sung by Breton supporters on October 1 during the championship match against Nantes (3-1).
In its press release, the League justifies its sanction by “behavior of Stade Rennes supporters: use of pyrotechnic devices and oral expressions observed”. In the 21st minute of the match counting for the 7th day of the French Ligue 1 championship, spectators at the Roazhon Celtic Kop resumed homophobic chants targeting the people of Nantes in general, and in particular Matthis Abline, a former Rennes player on loan this been to the Nantes club, which did not appear on the match sheet.
Decision postponed to October 25 for Montpellier-Clermont
The LFP also commented on the incidents which marred the meeting between Montpellier and Clermont on October 8, where the match was interrupted a few minutes from the end, because of a firecracker thrown in the direction of Auvergne goalkeeper Mory Diaw (90th+1).
In its press release, the LFP indicates that “in view of the seriousness of the facts, the Disciplinary Committee of the LFP decides to put the case under investigation. The decision will be made at the end of the session on Wednesday, October 25, at 6 p.m., during which the instructor will submit his report.”
