Nepal celebrates 70 years since the ascent of Everest by Nepalese Tenzing Norgay and New Zealander Edmund Hillary. They were the very first to reach the summit and are still the pride of the country today.
To the sound of fanfare, Nepal celebrates its heroes. The New Zealander Edmund Hillary and the child of the country Tenzing Norgay now have their statue, in the streets of a village at the foot of Everest. “May 29 is a day we will remember forever, we are very proud of what Hillary and Tenzing have accomplished. This is the day the world discovered our people, the Sherpa“, says the Nepalese mountaineer Sanu Sherpa.
“The doctors told us: ‘It’s inhuman'”
That day, at the end of an expedition of almost three months, the two mountaineers finally reached the roof of the world. The ascent was difficult and nearly cost them their lives. For the very first time, the summit of Everest was unveiled to human eyes. “The doctors told us: ‘It’s inhuman’. For them, up there, without oxygen, it was certain death“, testified Edmund Hillary in 2003. 70 years later, Everest continues to make mountaineers dream.
