Despite the government’s desire to keep schools open, some schools are forced to close.
Closed doors, for the Lycée de Provins (Seine-et-Marne). Faced with the multiplication of cases of Covid, teachers have decided to exercise their right of withdrawal, demanding immediate protection measures. “We claim a week in distance, a week in face, because we have groups of 35”, says Béatrice Gutierrez, high school teacher, South education delegate. In the high school of Guéret (Creuse) it is desertion, 150 students out of 730 are missing, positive or in case of contact.
The reinforced protocol since the start of the January school year seriously complicates the daily life of the management. “At the end of the results of their tests, if they are vaccinated (…) they can return to high school”, says Olivier Derouin, principal of the Pierre Bourdon high school. In a school group in Bayonne (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), 10% of students are absent due to Covid, and concerns are growing, in particular for the terminales. “We wonder if we will bring the Covid home and if we will be able to pass our Bac at the end of the year”, confides a student. In Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), anger is roaring at the government’s announcements to call on retirees to replace absent teachers. 7% of teachers are currently absent in France.
