Shipwrecked off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais) and Dunkirk (Nord), 68 migrants were rescued during the night from Friday to Saturday, the maritime prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea indicated this Saturday in a press release.
A first boat of migrants in difficulty was reported to the Gris-Nez Regional Operational Centre for Surveillance and Rescue (CROSS), near Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais). A French Navy patrol boat came to their aid.
“Once on site, the crew launched their light intervention vehicle which picked up two people on board who were requesting assistance. The Abeille-Normandie resumed its surveillance mission and indicated that other people still on board the boat were not requesting assistance.”writes the prefecture.
A little later in the night, a second boat was reported at the Gris-Nez Cross, this time in the Dunkirk sector. A maritime gendarmerie patrol boat went to meet it. “Once on site, the crew recovered 66 people on board requesting assistance. Several people still on board the boat refused the assistance offered by French resources. As previously, the decision was made to let them continue on their route given the risks incurred in the event of forced intervention.”
The rescued castaways were dropped off at the ports of Boulogne-sur-Mer and Dunkirk.
