Fifty-three surgeons from the Le Mans hospital present their administrative resignation on Thursday March 2, reports France Bleu Maine. The surgeons concerned sent a letter to the Minister of Health, François Braun. The goal is to denounce the shortage of doctors and the repeated closures of hospital beds.
The group of resigning surgeons explains that in 2022 it had to deal with an influx of patients, generated by the closures of emergency services in Sarthe and Mayenne. The hospital center could thus reach 80 daily surgeries. For lack of paramedical personnel in sufficient numbers, the management had to close 60 conventional surgery beds out of 150. Another consequence, the deprogramming of many surgical operations: 110 operations in all since January 9, some of which concern cancer patients.
An “administrative” resignation
Concretely, this resignation means that the 53 surgeons remain committed to their patients – in the name of the Hippocratic oath they will continue to treat them – but resign from all their administrative functions and responsibilities (head of department, participation in organization committees) .
The doctors also hope to alert the Regional Health Agency of Pays de la Loire, all the deputies and senators of Sarthe, or even the mayor of Le Mans Stéphane Le Foll who is also president of the Supervisory Board of the hospital. Also recipient of the letter from the collective, Dominique Le Mèner, president of the Sarthe departmental council, immediately wrote to the Minister of Health François Braun to report to him the concerns of the doctors. Already in February 2020, 17 department heads had resigned from Le Mans hospital for similar reasons.
