50 years ago, Augusto Pinochet carried out a coup d’état in Chile. Half a century later, his shadow still hangs over the country, where his legacy is well anchored.
On September 11, 1973, the army attacked the Presidential Palace in Santiago de Chile (Chile). El Salvador Allendedemocratically elected three years earlier, spoke on the airwaves. “I am sure that we will learn a moral lesson from this which will serve to punish felony, cowardice and treason”, he confided, before committing suicide a few hours later. Augusto Pinochet takes power and establishes the dictatorship.
“Nunca más”, the cry of Chileans in front of the Presidential Palace
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Augusto Pinochet’s coup, thousands of Chileans gathered chanting “Nunca más” (never again) in front of the Presidential Palace. “I am here to tell young people that they must take care of democracy”, says a citizen. However, the country is still divided in two.
