50th anniversary | Five Quebec creations for Duceppe’s next season

The Duceppe company unveiled the programming for its next season on Thursday, which will also mark its 50and anniversary. This includes five Quebec creations, carrying as many universes and personal visions of theatre.

We already knew two of the major plays of the season: the adaptation by David Laurin of the film by Louis Bélanger Gas Bar Blues, starring Martin Drainville as the patriarch who owns the gas station; and the Riopelle Project [titre de travail]the next creation by Robert Lepage, in coproduction with Ex Machina, on the life and work of the painter Jean Paul Riopelle, which will be on view at the end of April 2023, with Anne-Marie Cadieux and Luc Picard.

To these is added mom, a work by Nathalie Doummar, which will open the season in September. “A story of love and violence, transmission and transgression”, which also speaks of the resilience of women of immigrant origin in Quebec. The staging will be provided by Marie-Ève ​​Milot.

“A show about nothing”

Will follow in November Showtime – A big play, a proposal written, performed and directed by Simon Lacroix, Sonia Cordeau and Raphaëlle Lalande. These three artists from the Bocal Project will be surrounded by seven other actors on stage. At a time when artists must absolutely have a purpose in their work, show time will be “a show about nothing”. “The Bocal Project did not want to impose a subject on itself,” emphasizes Duceppe’s management. The creators will offer pure entertainment, without having the pressure to be in tune with social issues. »

In the winter of 2023, place for Manikanetish, theatrical adaptation, in a staging by co-director Jean-Simon Traversy, of the novel by Naomi Fontaine. This Innu author and teacher from the Côte-Nord made “a remarkable entrance on the literary scene in 2011, with Kuessipan. She adapted her other novel for the stage in collaboration with playwright Julie-Anne Ranger-Beauregard. She offers a mixture of narration and fiction, featuring seven Innu artists, ”sums up the press release.

According to its co-directors, Duceppe offers a “unifying theater with breadth”. His large field will be used to its full potential throughout the season.

“By offering five Quebec creations for our 50th anniversary, we are following the direct trajectory towards where the company is going,” explain David Laurin and Jean-Simon Traversy.

We continue to offer works that we cannot see elsewhere, which start from the intimate to go towards the universal. And also to support local writing, to make room for the next generation, to the diversity of stories to be told.

The programming for Duceppe’s next season (2022-2023) brings together many artists and places great emphasis on the next generation.

In addition to the five creations mentioned above, Duceppe will present the show-event One. Two. Three. by Mani Soleymanlou, with 40 performers from across Canada. This show will also tour nationally. At the center of the proposal, this question: “What, collectively, defines us, divides us and unites us?” »

The wolf by Nathalie Doummar, a play whose presentation had been cut short in 2020, will return from October 26 to 30, enhanced with a new epilogue. As well as other activities and plays in formula 5 to 7. Finally, Duceppe will welcome Fanny Britt in writing residence.
