Fifty years ago, during the Munich Olympics in 1972, eleven athletes were murdered by a group of Palestinian terrorists, who infiltrated the Olympic Village.
It was to be the Olympics of joy, it was those of terror. In 1972, Munich and Germany hosted the Summer Olympics. Among the athletes, the Israeli delegation and its 22 members are relishing the moment. On September 5, 1972, a Palestinian commando, called “Black September”, infiltrated the Olympic Village and killed two Israeli athletes and took nine others hostage.
After 18 hours of hostage-taking and negotiations, German policemen try to sneak through the roof. First failure. An agreement is then reached between the two parties, promising the exfiltration of the terrorists by plane. It is actually a decoy gone wrong. The terrorists understand the maneuver and execute the nine hostages. In total, eleven Israeli athletes lost their lives during these Olympics, i.e. half of the delegation.
