India and Pakistan are suffocating. Both countries have been dealing with a heat wave since March and it’s not over: lMeteorologists predict temperatures in Delhi could reach 46C on Thursday, April 28, 48°C in Rajasthan, and even 50°C in Jacobabad. Authorities advise vulnerable people to avoid going out. “A new analysis by climatologists has established a direct link between this heat wave and climate change caused by human activities”reported climatologists Mariam Zachariah and Friederike Otto, of Imperial College London, who recall that one in five people live in this region of the world.

The forecast temperatures are similar to those observed during the waves of
deadly heat that struck India and Pakistan in May and June 2015 and
killed at least 4,500 people. “During this heat wave, the airport of New
Delhi hit 44.6C, while the highest temperatures in India were
observed in Jharsuguda, Odisha, with 49.4°C. In Pakistan, Karachi has
recorded temperatures of 45°C, while other cities in the provinces of
Balochistan and Sindh reached 49°C”say the specialists.

Delhi firefighters were battling a fire Thursday at one of the Indian capital’s huge landfills, a 60m high mountain of garbage, whose thick smoke added to air pollution. Experts attribute these fires to the scorching heat that is currently hitting the city.
