Forty-six women died in clashes between rival gangs on Tuesday, June 20, in a prison in Honduras, located about 25 km north of the capital Tegucigalpa, announced the police spokesman. The fight also left five injured who were taken to a hospital in the capital. The majority of the victims burned to death while others succumbed to gunshot wounds, prosecutors’ spokesman Yuri Mora told AFP. An investigation is underway to determine which gang is behind the attack.

The president of Honduras calls for “accounts”

According to the representative of the families of the inmates, Delma Ordoñez, the victims are members of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, which seems to indicate, according to her, that the attack was carried out by inmates of the rival gang Barrio 18. Hundreds relatives of detainees gathered near the prison to try to obtain information on the precise identity of the victims.

Honduran President Xiomara Castro said on her Twitter account “shattered by the monstrous assassination”. She demanded “accounts” in particular the Minister of the Interior by promising “drastic measures” and dismissed the Minister of Security in the middle of the night. The president has “decided to appoint General Gustavo Sanchez as Minister of Security”previously director of the national police, according to a press release.
