“From September 2023, teachers at the start of their career will receive 2,000 euros per month”, confirms Monday, September 12 on franceinfo the Minister of National Education Pap Ndiaye. Emmanuel Macron announced it on August 25, during a back-to-school meeting of academy rectors at the Sorbonne.
“The increases will also concern mid-career teachers. We will specify the percentage increases from October, when the finance law is discussed in Parliament”, adds the Minister of National Education. The objective of the government with this better remuneration is in particular to attract more young people while the start of the school year was marked by a shortage of teachers.
“There is a teacher in front of each class”, assures Pap Ndiaye despite everything, being satisfied with a “good comeback” despite the “structural difficulties” and “frictional absences”. To ensure this return to school, the Ministry of National Education has hired “approximately 4,500 new contract employees for a general total of approximately 35,000 contract employees”. “It represents 1% of the workforce in the first degree and 6.5 to 8% of the workforce in the second degree.” A percentage “completely reasonable”according to the minister who still hopes to reduce it thanks to the announced salary increases which should make it possible to establish contract workers.

“Contractual employees do not benefit from a salary scale and salary increase comparable to what permanent agents can have”insists the Minister of National Education. “This will be even more true with the salary increases that we are going to propose. Today, there is also a dish in careers which last at least ten years and which we must touch so that teachers in mid-career see their progression materialize from a financial point of view.”
Pap Ndiaye also wishes “to reflect on the conditions of mutation, especially young teachers”. According to him, “the main reason” why contract secondary school teachers do not wish to be tenured, it is “the national movement” which makes that“one can be transferred 500 kilometers from home”.
