Monday June 13, a municipal campsite in Grau-du-Roi, in the Gard, was devastated by a fire. The fire caused no casualties and required the evacuation of 400 people.

A plume of black smoke was visible for several kilometers on Monday, June 13. A fire broke out in the early afternoon in a bungalow at the municipal campsite of L’Espiguette, at Grau-du-Roi (Gard). “We heard the siren and they asked us to evacuate, to go to the beach”, says a tourist. Firefighters battled the flames for more than two hours with the help of a helicopter.

“The difficulty is both access and control of a disaster which spread very, very quickly with the action of the wind and therefore, the need to sectorize our fire very quickly”, explains Colonel Jean-Michel Langlais, director of SDIS 30. No casualties are to be deplored and 400 people were evacuated. 60 new bungalows went up in smoke during the fire. “It is an economic loss (…) but I believe that the priority is that there are no victims”assures Frédéric Paulet, director of the campsite.
