40 ago years was born Amandine, the first test-tube baby. Today, we talk more about medically assisted procreation, as these practices have become commonplace. The doctor and journalist of France Télévisions Damien Mascret we Explain their evolution.

For Damian Mascretjournalist and doctor for France Télévisions, it is not surprising that medically assisted births have democratized because “Today, it is estimated that one in ten couples are infertile”. In 2019, for example, there were 27,063 children born through medically assisted procreation, out of a total of 753,383 births.

The oldest of these techniques is intrauterine insemination: a Scottish surgeon did it on his wife in 1780. Since then, the processes have evolved, but today, it is still 21% of children born by medically assisted procreation who are born by intrauterine insemination. “From the age of 31, fertility begins to decline in women, and from the age of 35, one in two women has completely exhausted her stock of oocytes”concludes Damien Mascret.
