Monday, April 3, the trial of the attack on rue Copernic, which caused 4 deaths in a synagogue in Paris in 1980, will take place. Hassan Diab, a Lebanese-Canadian sociology professor, will be at the center of the discussions.
On October 3, 1980, at 6:35 p.m., a bomb exploded in the heart of Paris, in a synagogue in the 16th arrondissement, killing 4 people and injuring 38. The windows of five buildings were shattered and cars were thrown. “All of a sudden, [il y a eu] this immense explosion of which I still have the noise in my ears, and the canopy which collapsed on us“, recalls Corinne Adler, survivor that day, when she was still a teenager.
The evidence is thin
Robot portraits of the owner of the motorcycle on which the bomb was attached are then made. In 1999, the name of Hassan Diab, a Lebanese-Canadian sociology professor, finally emerged. He is then arrested, but the evidence is thin and Hassan Diab proclaims his innocence. Released after three years in detention, he will be at the heart of the trial on Monday April 3. He will probably be absent.
