Between April 2 and 19, 37 outbreaks of avian flu were detected in the Dordogne, reports France Bleu Périgord on Tuesday. Seven were discovered in less than a week. A first outbreak was detected on Saturday April 2 in a goose farm in Saint-Geniès, in the Périgord Noir. The department had not been affected by avian influenza since the winter of 2015-2016.
Since Saturday April 16, there is “seven additional proven outbreaks and four suspicions, i.e. two outbreaks discovered every day, always in the same areas”, according to Yannick Frances, vice-president of the Dordogne Chamber of Agriculture. In the Périgord Vert, 700 geese were slaughtered on Tuesday in an experimental farm in Coulaures.
For the Chamber of Agriculture, the situation is worrying and we must now contain the epizootic with “a new zoning”. It proposes that producers located within a radius of 20 kilometers around an outbreak can transport their healthy animals to force-feed them and slaughter them in order to create stocks for the winter and summer period. The Chamber of Agriculture recommends setting up “crawl spaces” very localized around the hearths to allow production to resume quickly. She challenged the State on the compensation expected by breeders who have lost their livestock and their animals. A new prefectural decree is expected on Wednesday.
