33 new charges against a man already accused of five rapes

Samuel Moderie, already accused of drugging and raping five women he allegedly trapped on dating sites, may have claimed at least ten other victims between January 2022 and today, according to new charges filed on Friday.

The 28-year-old man from Saint-Zotique, imprisoned since his arrest on 1er February, has been described by an expert as a sexual sadist. He already pleaded guilty, in 2019, to a series of charges of sexual assault and voyeurism, which earned him two years in prison.

Moderie, who was on probation, was arrested on 1er February and first charged with sexual assaults against five women. One of the counts concerns sexual assault “by choking or strangling,” said Crown prosecutor Jérôme Laflamme.

On Friday, 33 new charges were added for sexual assaults he allegedly committed against 10 other women in Montreal, Saint-Jérôme, McMasterville and Brownsburg-Chatham. Moderie is also charged with voyeurism, theft of property and possession of drugs.

According to the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), the accused would have gone to his victims’ homes and would have drugged them with a soporific agent or a noxious substance, before attacking them. In some cases, he would then have stolen objects belonging to his victims.

He would have filmed several of his attacks.

Four of the ten new victims described in the indictments filed Friday have not yet been identified by the SPVM. Everything suggests that they appear in videos of assaults that Moderie would have filmed.

The SPVM’s Sexual Assault Section is investigating this case, in collaboration with the Sûreté du Québec, the Richelieu–Saint-Laurent intermunicipal police board and the Saint-Jérôme police department. Police forces have established a Serial Crime Investigation Management Structure (GECS), which allows them to share resources to identify crimes committed by predators and protect victims.

Anyone who may have been a victim of Samuel Moderie is invited to contact the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal at 514 280-8502, to go to their neighborhood police station or to call 911 to register a complaint.

The SPVM also invites people who have information relevant to the investigation to call 514 393-1133.

Samuel Moderie is 1.78m tall, weighs 80kg and has white skin. He has tattoos on his right arm and chest, speaks French, and has brown hair and brown eyes.
