Samu social: 30 years of existence for the system to help the homeless, overwhelmed by demands – (franceinfo)
The weekend of Saturday November 18 marks thirty years of the existence of Samu social, a group of non-governmental associations which help the homeless. Social Samu is faced with increasing demands.
Samu social celebrates its thirtieth anniversary during the weekend of Saturday, November 18. This group of non-governmental associations helps homeless people across the country. Every night and throughout the year, mobile aid teams (EMA) go to meet destitute people. In 1993, the Samu social carried out its first marauding raids in Paris. Missions then carried out to the four corners of France.
300,000 homeless
The number of homeless people has doubled in the space of ten years: 300,000 people are affected in 2023. The profiles have diversified with the context of the migration crisis, but also the precariousness of many sectors of activity, according to Vanessa Benoît, general director of Samu social de Paris. The demands today far exceed the capacities of the system. The Samu social de Lyon appealed for donations, for the first time in its history, on Wednesday November 15.
